Over at MIT, students have recognized that underwater autonomous vehicles (UAVs) have their limitations while monitoring pipelines, sunken ships and pollution. To overcome these limitations, keeping in mind the long run benefit, they have built a school of fish robots that can easily maneuver around and help researchers understand the underwater world better. Measuring less than a foot long, these mechanical fish require 2.5 to 5 watts of power (presently from an external source), but efforts are underway to include internal batteries. Once things are in place, it would then be mass produced.
