Though many attempts have been made earlier to impart a more realistic view of the world to the visually impaired, the latest endeavor made by Rika Ito (a postgraduate student of the Tokyo University) deserves much appreciation and applause. Ito, the proud creator of a device competent of decoding the variations between light and shadows into vibrations, has very closely overcome the limitations of one of the primary tools of visual perception. Ito displayed this device named ‘Tough light through the leaves’ during the open campus at the Tokyo University on May 30, 2008, which makes the remote sensing of the subtle variations between light and shadows easier. The camera equipped on its top records variations of the ambient light and vibrators on its bottom. This device has been successfully tested under the leaves of a tree, which provided shadows for the demonstration. Another drop in the ocean of Japanese technology!
